Buying a bike?
Before you buy a bike, it's important to ensure that it can be made to fit. All frames have slightly different geometries, and you won't get the optimal performance out of a bike if it can't be adjusted to suit your body shape, level of fitness, and the type of riding you want to do.
Determining the optimum geometry is done by first taking body measurements and testing flexibility. Then with a combination of experience and sophisticated bike fitting software, Ben can provide you with the ideal geometry for your new frame and advise you which models come closest to the required fit.
Ben can also advise you what components (e.g. pedal systems, bars, saddles) would be best suited to you.
The cost for this service is $80 (including HST). Once you've purchased your bike, if you wish to upgrade to the full bike fitting service described below, then you would just pay the difference.
Already have a bike?
Even if your frame is the perfect size for you, how the bike is set up can make a huge difference to performance and can prevent injury. Set-up varies massively depending on the type of riding you wish to do, e.g. recreational riding vs. time trialling.
The use of body measurements and software is only part of the equation when getting a bike to fit you properly. These provide a general guideline, but even the most sophisticated software can't possibly take into account all the subtle variations in people's physiology. Therefore, a critical step is to analyse a rider's position on the bike and to make adjustments based on the look and feel of that position. What may be the perfect fit on paper may not work for your body.
Even if the frame size is correct, there are multiple adjustments that are necessary to ensure that you are in the best possible riding position on your bike. Factors include things like seat height; seat fore-aft position; stem length; handlebar height and width; crank-arm length; and even pedal, cleat and shoe selection. Getting the right combination requires a great deal of experience.
Typically, fitting an existing bike is done in two stages - a short initial appointment to take body measurements and to discuss how the bike is to be used and any current issues with the set-up, followed by a 2-3 hour (approx.) appointment where your position on the bike is analysed and adjusted.
The total cost for this service is typically $150 (including HST).
"I can't thank (Ben) enough for setting up my bike...My new position is kind to my body! My knees never gave me any trouble after our bike ride. Usually, I find it hard on my knees to walk down stairs. Ben makes a good doctor. :-)" Kat MacBay (cyclist and triathlete)
